Dark Skies &
Light Pollution

Light pollution - the encroachment of artificial light into the night sky - was once thought of as only important to astronomers. Although astronomers and astronomy are important (some of our best friends are astronomers), protecting the night sky just for astronomers would be like protecting Grand Canyon just for geologists. Yet no one ever seems to think so narrowly about the landscape of the magnificent Canyon or other beautiful and amazing features of nature.

It is our hope that after looking through the following pages you may think more broadly about the need to conserve and protect the night sky.

Who will SAVE THE NIGHT SKY for FUTURE GENERATIONS?

Once a source of wonder and enjoyment, the star-filled skies of just a few years ago are rapidly vanishing behind a foggy haze of artificial light. Millions of children across the globe will never experience the Milky Way where they live. Light pollution harms the planet, wastes money, and threatens the health and safety of many species of life.

The night sky provides perspective, inspiration, and lets us reflect on our humanity and place in the universe.
